Coming into the match both teams were near the bottom of the Pacific Rugby Cup, the two Fijian sides had pride and Fiji rugby jerseys at stake. The Warriors and the Barbarians were the two teams on the pitch, both were playing on a boggy wet field; only one of them played with passion and that was the unfancied Barbarians team. Their opponents the Warriors boast 4 players from the Flying Fijians World cup squad, this meant nothing to the Babas as they set about their task and posted an impressive 29 to 7 win in Labasa.
Barbarians number 8 Aca Bibi looks like he has eaten a lot of Dalo and proved a handful all day, his head was down and carved up yards in the trying conditions. As the match went on the only thing going for the Warriors were their test jerseys, slipping through their own fingers were there chances of playing for Fiji and the Babas team look set to grab a few of the test jerseys with an impressive and gutsy display.
This game saw very little fire for the Warriors team, number 8 Deryck Thomas tried all day, Aca Ratuva looked strong but both of these men lacked the backup required in a team game. Everything one Warrior did was met by 2 or 3 Barbarians to bring them to the ground, the Babas hunted in numbers, did the grunt work when required and unleashed impressive outside backs when it was on.
Coach Illy Tabua will be scratching his head now as soon it is test match time, selections will be limited with a lot of stars out with overseas commitments. If he could select on form he would, the fact is though that there is not much form about for him. The comforting thing though is that now is the time to build for the future & Fijians are more dangerous when they are written off.
