The woman from down under have put together a commanding display of expansive rugby to book their spot in the woman’s RWC.

In hot muggy conditions in Apia- Samoa, the Aussies ran out winners 87 nil. In the process they showed all the skills that many world teams can only dream off and cemented their spot in the Woman’s RWC in England next year.

Over the past 2 weeks the best of Australian woman have been in the chill zone of Australia’s capital Canberra, today the heat was literally applied to them as they faced Samoa at home. The heat, the crowd and some big ladies from Manusina Samoa were all against them, in the face of fire a class team was up to the challenge. The Australian woman played a patient game, backed their superior fitness and ability to come out on top.

The match started with some genuine vigor from Manusina, tackles were stern and the Samoan welcome like Brain Lima used to dish out was laid on for the Aussies. They took the panel beating well and let the body position and mental composure see them through. The eventual score line tells a different story, but the Australian side earnt their victory today, a lesser team would have been put to the sword by this world conquering side.

Manusina ended way behind in the numbers, but their grit, never give up attitude and effort was for 80 mins. It is quite simple, they haven’t been together long, in fact they have never had a match as a team prior to this, around the rucks and lineout’s they were exposed. Australia applied the smart gene that many of their sports sides have; they also had a master plan that all 15 followed. In Samoa’s D there were some mighty tackles, even try saving efforts, non more so than outstanding number 7 Fa’Aloalo Talaga, the problem was that Australia were as persistent as a mosquito at night and kept coming at them.

The real separation was a varied and planned game the Wallaroos employed, they did the hard yards, they plucked lineout’s and drove, they spun it wide, they tackled and they supported each other for a full 80 mins. Their greatest skill was using the width, every time they secured valuable ball is was spun, backs were eager and chomping to use their speed. If holes were shut, Ruan Simms ran up the centre like a truck, she shows little respect for her own limbs and plenty of respect for her yellow jersey. Her straightness created havoc all over the place as the 5 people to stop her were all of a sudden missing in action.

Another key person was Debbie Hodgekinson, playing in the boot for the Aussie pack she is a hungry lady. The ball is what she feasts on and she is never too far away from the action, she is also equipped with a mind that unloads brilliant passes to her teammates. She played  a grand game and today was even more special for her as she was named the Emirates Personality of the year.

Australia rattles up the points; their team have made the first step to be in the hunt for the world cup. They have talent to burn, drive to do the hard work and for sure they will be in the running for the gold cup in England next year.
